Kitchen Design as a Career Option

Interior design, Fashion design, Jewelry design are some of the more common fields when it comes to studying design, but students today have another interesting option, that of Kitchen Design. A kitchen is one of the most important rooms of the house, and every home definitely has a kitchen. Earlier there were very fixed options as to the look and structure of an Indian kitchen. However, with the impact of globalization, the internet and the exposure available nowadays, kitchens have evolved from being just a room to a fashion statement. There are multiple styles and types of kitchens in demand these days. The boom in the housing industry and looking at the number of residential projects coming up, kitchen design as a career option is an upcoming and booming field to be in.

The fact that modular furniture and kitchens are becoming increasingly popular has also boosted the demand for kitchen designers. An interior designer’s education does consist of a few aspects of kitchen design, but having a specific education in kitchen design does boost one’s credibility as well as employability.

Timbor Skillvarsity offers a certified ‘Kitchengineer’ course. This course focused towards upgradation of skills and is aimed not only at students but at house-wives as well. This 3 month course guarantees placement after completion which is why one of the main criterion for a student is to be atleast 18 years of age.

Timbor Skillvarsity Organises Seminar on Design left Participants Rooting for More

Timbor Home, leading Indian modular kitchen and furniture manufacturer-retailer, organized a free seminar through its institute, Timbor Skillvarsity, on “Introduction to Design – Opportunities on the Home Front” at Ahmedabad on the 11th of May. Niraj Shah, Partner & Design consultant from Ido Design, Ranna Parikh, Architect and member of the Ahmedabad Chapter of the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), Dexter Pereira, Architect & Interior Designer and Moksh Thapar, Industrial Designer were the speakers at the seminar.

The seminar was aimed at giving information about the fundamental principles of design, creating awareness regarding the opportunities in the furniture industry and the need for Kitchen Designers, the skills required to be a designer, current trends in interiors, furniture and modular kitchens while also emphasizing the importance of having one’s own personal style and how to incorporate it while decorating one’s house.

The seminar was attended by people from diverse backgrounds, ranging from 10th and 12th students, graduates to housewives to people from the plywood industry and the like. This was an interesting mix as there were people with a design background as well as people with no idea on design either. The youngest participant, Kamya, aged 14 while the oldest was an over 60 year old gentleman who came with his two undergraduate granddaughters. The 40 participants, albeit from different stages and places in life, enjoyed the seminar immensely and took away a lot from it.

The seminar started off with Niraj Shah, who explained the various principles of design – this session kept the participants rooted to their seats as many different perspectives were highlighted and came out through this. Dexter Pereira took a lecture of space planning, after which the participants were given a design problem wherein they designed their own kitchen. Ranna Parikh took a lovely and interactive session on the trends in furniture, themed rooms, etc. The jury of the four speakers chose five of the most interesting designs which were then discussed – it was amazing to see so much creativity abound! The seminar ended off with Moksh Thapar answering queries and dispelling myths, such as the benefits of granite as a kitchen counter as opposed to marble. The reason why granite is preferred (since it is less porous and a harder material) and much more. Certificates of participation were given and each the seminar ended on a very positive note.

There is a huge skill gap in the furniture and modular kitchen industry. Timbor Skillvarsity, with its vision, ‘Be Skilled. Be Employed.’ is a skill development initiative aimed at reducing this very gap and creating a skilled employable workforce. The initiative has been appreciated and funded by the Gujarat Government Industries Commissionerate through the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED).

Other courses offered are Basic English, Woodwork & Carpentry and ProFit. The institute has been rated first for employability by the Gujarat Skill Development Mission (GSDM).

With this encouragement from the design fraternity and the support from the entire industry, Timbor has plans to hold regular workshops and seminars related to Beautifying one’s home, Public Speaking, Personality Development, Healthy Cooking, and much much more over the next few months.

Edible Furniture! - Milan Furniture Fair

The annual furniture fair at Milan had a very interesting display by Milan-based designers Ryosuke Fukusada and Rui Pereira. The Sapore dei Mobili (Taste of Furniture) is a waffle pan that turns out tiny edible furniture, as a "reflection about the velocity of the contemporary furniture industry and how the consumers are unable to digest the huge amount of new products launched every year." Because how better to make design digestible than to make design that can be literally digested?

Apart from miniature lamps and tables, the furniture pan also molds edible chairs, vases and credenzas, from a mix of traditional Japanese small cakes, baby castella and a Portuguese egg pastry called ovos moles, a culinary mirror of the designers' respective nationalities. But Fukusada and Pereira encourage experimentation: topping the tiny furniture set with jam, sprinkles and powdered sugar. Simply put, it is design in good taste.!

Mercedes Benz - From Luxury Cars to Luxury Furniture

The name Mercedes Benz evokes images of luxury and finesse. Mercedes cars are coveted for two reasons: the luxury of their materials and craftsmanship, and Merc's uncanny ability to infuse an inanimate object with so much sex appeal. The German automaker, Mercedes, together with Italian furniture manufacturer Formitalia Luxury Group, unveiled a complete collection of home goods at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, comprising a sofa, chaise longue, dining room table with chairs, shelf unit, bed, and chest of drawers. Mercedes' foray into home decor and furniture brings luxury, sleek styles and class to one's room, and not just one's garage anymore!.

The pieces in the collection feature subtle hints that they were crafted by a car manufacturer such as the abundance of leather and aluminum. The rolling lines and accent stitching lend the luxury furniture line's black leather sofa an uncanny resemblance to a car's backseat, while the smooth streamline of the Mercedes chaise longue has an aerodynamic quality to it. The designs also include a futuristic, finely-tuned aluminum sideboard's glass panel, not unlike a car door, and the legs of a glass table, designed in the same vein as sculpted spokes. The Mercedes-Benz furniture collection was on view at the Daimler Milan showroom, and is set to be available all over the globe from the end of this year.

Musician, Lenny Kravitz now a Funiture Designer too!

The extremely talented rocker, songwriter and actor, Lenny Kravitz has now added another tag to his creative credentials, that of a furniture designer. Kravitz's two new creations were unveiled at the Milan Furniture Fair, with idolizing fans applauding the projects. Kravitz has created a series of chairs for Kartell based on Philippe Starck's iconic "Mademoiselle" armchair, clad, like, at times the rocker himself, in python, leather or fur. And he also designed black and white tiles inspired by water drops and waves for Lea Ceramiche.

Lenny Kravtiz dates his inspiration to design way back in his childhood, where his drive pushed him to create an environment where he would feel inspired to write songs. Interestingly, Kravitz already has a background in design. He founded his own design company Kravitz Design Inc., in 2003, and has previously worked with Swarovski on a series of crystal chandeliers, designed a luxury recording studio in Miami Beach and conceived the Florida Room lounge at the Delano hotel in Miami, among other projects. The two Milan debuts represent a step toward larger scale production.

Is it only rock stars and celebrities that can become designers or add to their skill set - obviously not! Today, there are multiple courses available, in India and abroad. One just needs to take the initiative, do a search on the web and choose from the varied options available.
